DuPont automotive clear coat is applied in the same way that other clear topcoats are applied. The technician must be careful to properly mix the DuPont clear coat and then apply it so that it does not run or sag. There is no remedy for this when it happens. The technician can only practice and learn how to gauge the amount of clear coat that will adhere to the surface without sagging or running.
Pour the unreduced DuPont clear coat into the paint mixing cup. There is a graduated measuring line on the side of the cup that indicates that it is used for clear coat in a 4:1:1 ratio. You will be using four parts clear coat, one part hardener and one part reducer. Mix the three together thoroughly with a paint stick.
Place the funnel strainer over the paint cup on the spray gun, and then pour the mixed DuPont clear coat into the spray gun.
Secure the paint gun's lid in place, then attach the air line to the spray gun base.
Spray a test pass on the masked-off portion of the vehicle being painted to ensure that the DuPont clear coat is spraying through the gun properly. Moving in smooth, steady strokes, it should take on the appearance of smooth, polished glass. Applying clear coat too slowly will result in sags and runs. Applying it too quickly will result in dry coating, which takes much longer to buff and polish than a correctly applied coat of clear.
Apply the clear coat in steady strokes, starting from the top of the car and working your way down. Overlap each stroke of the spray gun by one-half to obtain optimum coverage. Allow the DuPont clear coat to cure in the paint booth for approximately one hour prior to removal, sanding and final buffing.
