Sand the damaged area of the Prius bumper with 180-grit sandpaper to remove flaking or peeling paint and to smooth the damaged area. Apply a thick coat of body filler putty and let it dry for an hour. After it dries, sand it with 180-grit sandpaper until it is smooth and level with the surrounding surface of the bumper.
Wipe the sanded and surrounding area with wax and grease remover, and a microfiber towel. This is to remove any grease from fingerprints and any wax from previous cleaners that may affect the finished paint job. Place the masking tape and paper around the area so paint and over-spray don't land on any other part of the Prius.
Spray the repaired area with a thick coat of primer and allow it to dry for 30 minutes. Sand the primer with 220-grit sandpaper to make it smooth. Sand lightly so you don't sand completely through the primer. Wipe it down again with wax and grease remover.
Apply three thin coats of color-matched spray paint to the area, waiting 15 minutes between coats. Hold the spray 6 to 8 inches from the surface using thin, even strokes. Keep the coats thin to prevent the paint from running. Spray three coats of clear coat paint using the same techniques used with the color-matched paint. Remove the masking paper and tape. Wait a full day before handling the repaired area.
