Chevy Impala Steering Column Problems

The Chevrolet Impala was introduced in 1958. In 2011, it is a full-size sedan equipped with a V-8 engine. Original production on the Impala ceased in 1985 but the brand was revived from 1994 to1996 and then again starting in 2000.

Steering Column

  • Multiple Chevrolet technical service bulletins (TSBs) report that steering column problems are common amongst 2000 to 2007 Impala models. The steering column, also known as the steering shaft, allows the vehicle's wheels to turn. TSBs state that the main indicator of steering column issues are "clunking" noises from the Impala's front end while turning the wheel.

Recall Notices

  • Chevrolet issued a national steering recall on every Impala model year from 2000 to 2007. The primary cause of the recalls were defective steering knuckles and steering columns/shafts. Defective steering columns/shafts and broken steering knuckles, which are attached to the steering column, may result in loss of steering and/or and an accident.

Dealer Service

  • If you own a 2000 to 2007 Impala and have not received a recall notice, contact your Chevrolet dealer. If your vehicle is on the recall list, your steering knuckles and/or steering shaft will be replaced free of charge.
