With fuel costs rising, the diesel engine has become more popular, as it is more efficient and cost effective than a gas-powered engine. Diesel is more costly than gasoline, but it is more energy efficient, causing the diesel automobile to have a higher mileage than it's gas-guzzling cousin. Gas engines use spark ignition technology, whereas a diesel engine operates on compression ignition for igniting the fuel. This causes the engine to run much hotter. When problems occur, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can take before taking your car in for a costly visit to the mechanic.
Drain the fuel tank immediately if there is gasoline in the system. Flush the system thoroughly and replace with diesel fuel. Check the fuel filter for any blockages and replace if necessary.
Check the injection lines for leaks or breaks if there is difficulty starting the vehicle. Tighten the connections to eliminate any leaks. Check and clean the fuel nozzle if you have trouble starting the vehicle. Replace the nozzle if necessary.
Bleed the fuel system if the engine tends to surge while idling. This will eliminate air in the fuel system
Check the fuel injection pump if the engine idles roughly when warm. The pump could be defective or unable be adjusted. Replace if necessary.
Readjust the timing if the engine has low power. The pump to engine timing could be incorrect. This can also help with excessive fuel consumption. Adjust the maximum speed screw for low power.
