Blower Motor Location on a '01 Grand Am

The compact size, N-body, Grand Am was produced by General Motors' Pontiac division for the 1985-through-2005 model years. Although it had a 20-year run, probably due to its affordable price, the N-body was rated low in comfort and handling. The 2001 Grand Am came with a choice of a 2.4-liter, 150-horsepower four-cylinder engine or a 3.4-liter, 170-horsepower V-6 engine.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean rags
  • Sockets
  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Turn the ignition key to "lock" position and remove it. Locate the two panels under the dashboard, below the glove box. Remove the push-pins securing the right panel by pulling out the center piece of each pin with two fingers, freeing the main body of the pin for removal. Remove the screws securing the left panel under the glove box with a socket and ratchet. Slide the control module, under the blower motor, out of its bracket and set it aside.

  • Disconnect the wire connector from the blower motor. Remove the three screws securing the blower motor to the housing. Remove the blower motor assembly. If you need to replace the blower motor resistor, now is the time to do it. It's right behind the blower motor and easy to get to with the motor out. Disconnect the wire connector from the blower motor resistor, remove the two screws from the resistor, and remove it from the housing.

  • Install the new resistor and tighten the screws to 45 inch-pounds with a torque wrench. Be careful when torquing these screws -- plastic strips easily -- especially when it is older and brittle. If you feel like it might strip, just tighten the screws til they are snug. Connect the wire connector to the resistor. Install the blower motor assembly and tighten the screws to 45 inch-pounds -- same precaution. Connect the wire connector.

  • Turn the key to "accessories." Test the blower on each speed to make sure it works properly. Turn the key to "lock." Slide the control module onto the bracket. Install the panels, securing the left with the screws and the right with the push-pins.
