How to Install the Wiper Switch in a 2004 Ford Freestar

Ford’s Freestar minivan had a short production run – from 2004 through 2007. The short run could be attributed to several factors, but the most obvious was that this “all-new” model wasn’t much more than a rebadged Windstar. The looks of the Windstar wasn’t the only thing that carried over however, as both models shared some of the same common failures. In this case we’re talking about the windshield wiper switch. When this switch fails, you can lose operation of not only the wipers, but the turn signals, headlights, or even the horn. You can acquire a replacement switch at most local parts stores, and replace it with common hand tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Memory saver
  • Battery wrench
  • Thin Phillips screwdriver
  • Socket set
  • Ratchet

Removal

  • Install a memory saver to the vehicle according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Open then hood. Loosen the negative battery cable with a battery wrench, then remove the cable from the battery.

  • Insert the ignition key into the ignition, then turn it to the “On” position. Look under the the bottom steering column trim, and find the small hole just below the ignition lock cylinder. Slide a thin Phillips screwdriver into the hole and depress the button inside. Pull outward on the key and lock cylinder to remove it from the steering column.

  • Remove the three screws that secure the lower column cover to the steering column, then remove the cover. Pull outward on the finish panel at the bottom of the instrument cluster to disengage its clips, then remove it. Lift the upper steering column cover.

  • Remove the two bolts for the turn signal switch, using a socket and ratchet. Remove the switch and disconnect the wiring harness from it.

Installation

  • Connect the wiring harness to the new switch, then guide the switch into place. Note: Pay special attention that you don’t pinch any of the wires between the switch and the column. Install the mounting bolts and snug them.

  • Install the upper column cover, then pressfit the finish panel to the dash board. Install the lower column cover and snug the screws.

  • Hold the lock cylinder so that the key would be in the "On" position, then slide it into the steering column. Pull outward on the lock cylinder gently to make sure it is secured, then turn the key to the “Off” position. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery. Remove the memory saver.
