The crankshaft position sensor on a 2005 Hyundai Accent is located next to the flywheel on the right side of the engine compartment. This sensor actively monitors the rotational position of the crankshaft and sends this information to the powertrain control module, or PCM. The PCM uses this information to make a number of decisions about how to efficiently manage the engine, including when to fire the spark plugs. When the crankshaft position sensor is faulty, the engine may start and stall, or it may not start at all. Replacement crankshaft position sensors are available from auto parts stores and the parts departments at certified Hyundai dealerships.
Turn off the engine, open the hood and allow it to cool for at least one hour.
Locate the crankshaft position sensor on the lower right side of the engine block, to the left of the crankshaft pulley, below the exhaust manifold. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor’s black, single-write electrical connector.
Set a digital multimeter to ohms in order to measure resistance.
Touch and hold the red digital multimeter probe to terminal 1 on the crankshaft position sensor. Touch and hold the black digital multimeter probe to terminal 2 on the crankshaft position sensor. Note the reading on the digital multimeter’s screen. The specified value for resistance on the sensor is 0.486 to 0.594 kOhms. If the value displayed on the digital multimeter is outside the specified value, then the crankshaft sensor is faulty and must be replaced.
