Removal of a 2001 Silverado Blower Motor

Before the 1999 introduction of the Chevrolet Silverado, Chevy used the “Silverado” name to identify the highest trim level of its C- and K-series pickups from 1975 through 1998. The 2001 Silverado came in three sizes: 1500, 2500 and 3500. The base level 2001 Silverado 1500 came standard with a 200-horsepower, 4.3-liter V-6 engine. The 2001 Silverado did not come standard with air conditioning, but its standard heater used the same blower motor that the optional air conditioning used. Removing and reinstalling the blower motor in the 2001 Silverado is slightly unorthodox, as it has no bolts securing it, just a locking tab.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet
  • Socket
  • Inch-pound torque wrench
  • Adjust the passenger’s side seat as far back as it will go. Look under the passenger’s side of the dashboard and find the plastic cover over the blower motor. Remove the screws securing this cover, using a ratchet and socket.

  • Press and hold the unlocking button on the blower motor’s wiring harness and unplug the harness. Remove the blower motor cover.

  • Pull upward on the small tab on the perimeter of the blower motor to unlock it, then rotate the blower motor counterclockwise to disengage it from the heater box. Lower the blower motor from the heater box.

  • Slide a new blower motor into the heater box and rotate the blower motor clockwise until the tab locks the motor into place.

  • Reinstall the blower motor cover and plug in the blower motor’s wiring harness. Tighten the blower motor’s retaining screws to 14 inch-pounds with an inch-pound torque wrench and socket.
