How to Fix Bubbles on a Vinyl Car Console

The two main reasons for bubbles accumulating under the vinyl material of a car's console are improper installation and age. The bubbles form under the vinyl material when the vinyl separates from the foam that holds the vinyl in place. Once a bubble has formed underneath the vinyl, it will need to be repaired as soon as possible to prevent the bubble from getting bigger. Vinyl bubbles can be repaired with masking tape, a needle, a hair dryer and a small vinyl seam roller.

Things You'll Need

  • Liquid dish soap
  • Sponge
  • Clean soft cloth
  • Masking tape
  • Needle
  • Hair dryer
  • Extension cord
  • Small vinyl seam roller
  • Park the vehicle on a flat surface and turn the engine off. Clean the surface around the vinyl bubble with clean soapy water and a sponge. Dry the bubble area with a clean soft cloth.

  • Place a strip of masking tape over the bubble so that the tape overlaps the bubble by 1/2-inch on both sides of the bubble.

  • Poke multiple holes through the masking tape and into the bubble with a needle. This will allow a small amount of glue to get inside of the small holes when the tape is heated up.

  • Run an extension cord to the vehicle and heat the masking tape for one to three minutes determining on the size of the bubble. Hold the hair dryer tip about 3 inches to 5 inches away from the masking tape. Move the tip of the hair dryer across the entire taped area to evenly distribute the heat across the taped bubble.

  • Turn the hair dryer off and immediately begin rolling out the bubble across the taped area with a small vinyl seam roller until the bubble is no longer there. Roll the seam roller back and forth across the taped area to flatten the bubble back to the underlying foam. Keep rolling the seam roller across the taped area until the bubble is completely removed.

  • Wait about 10 minutes after the bubble has been removed and then gently pull the masking tape off of the vinyl.
