Where Is the Oil Pressure Sending Unit Located on a 1998 Buick Park Avenue?

The 1998 Buick Park Avenue -- Buick's full-sized luxury vehicle -- came in two trim levels, base and Ultra. Both trim levels came with a 3.8-liter V-6 engine, but the Ultra trim level's engine had a supercharger that gave it an additional 35 horsepower. When the oil pressure sending unit fails on the 1998 Park Avenue, you can no longer monitor the oil pressure. Replacing the sending unit is relatively easy, once you locate it.

Function of the Oil Pressure Sending Unit

  • The oil pressure sending unit detects the amount of pressure created in the oil system of the 1998 Park Avenue. The oil pressure sending unit then relays the oil pressure to the Park Avenue's computer, and the computer sends a signal to the oil pressure gauge on the dashboard. With this system, you can easily monitor the oil pressure while driving.

Oil Pressure Sending Unit Location

  • Buick positioned the oil pressure sending unit on the engine block, just below the power steering pump.

Sealing the Oil Pressure Sending Unit

  • In most cases, a new oil pressure sending unit for the 1998 Park Avenue has thread sealer already applied -- the threads have a red coating on them. If there is no coating, apply a thin coat of liquid thread sealer to the thread and allow it to dry prior to installing the new sending unit. Failure to do so could result in the sensor leaking oil.
