If your Volkswagen Beetle Convertible has a window regulator that is not functioning properly, there could be two possible issues. Either the regulator itself has gone bad and will need to be replaced or, more commonly, the regulator fuse has blown out and will need to be replaced. Replacing the fuse will only take a few minutes, but removing the regulator requires the removal of the inner panel from the door, which can take well over an hour to complete.
Lift the hood of the Beetle and disconnect the battery's negative terminal cable using a socket wrench.
Remove the retaining clips from the edge of the inner door-panel with a flat-head screwdriver. Pull off the inner door panel.
Pull off the water deflector from the edge of the door.
Unfasten the screws from the door lock assembly using a Phillips-head screwdriver.
Use a flat-head screwdriver to unhook the locking cable from the assembly and remove the door lock assembly from the door.
Lift the window out by sliding it through the door vent.
Drill out the five rivets from the window regulator. The window regulator can be located at the center of the door, just below the window. Unplug the regulator wiring harness and pull it off of the door.
Place the new regulator onto the door and secure it by installing its retaining bolts with a socket wrench. Plug the wiring harness back into the regulator and slide the window back into the door.
Reattach the lock cable to the door lock assembly and reattach the retaining screws. Place the inner panel back onto the door and reattach all of the retaining clips. Close the door.
Connect the negative terminal to the battery and close the Beetle's hood.
Open the hood and lift off the Beetle's fuse block cover.
Remove the fuse in slot 32. Install a replacement 10-amp fuse using a fuse puller.
Close the fuse block cover and close the hood.
