How to Change a 2006 Dodge RAM 3500 Headlight Bulb

Dodge changed the name of all of its pickup trucks to "Ram" in 1981. The initial release of the Ram included three sizes, 150, 250 and 350. In 1994, Dodge changed the sizes slightly to 1500, 2500 and 3500. The 2006 Ram 3500 came standard with a 5.7-liter V-8 that produced 330 horsepower and 375 foot-pounds of torque. The Ram 3500 had a 5.9-liter in-line six-cylinder diesel option available that cranked out 325 horsepower and 610 foot-pounds of torque. The 2006 Ram 3500 had a "big-rig" like grille and headlight design. Replacing the headlight bulbs in these semi-like headlight assemblies is relatively easy.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet
  • Socket set
  • Style H13 headlight bulb
  • Torque wrench
  • Park the 2006 Dodge Ram on flat ground and engage the parking brake before proceeding.

  • Open the Ram's hood and remove the two bolts on the inner part of the headlight assembly with a ratchet and socket.

  • Detach the rubber plug from the front, inner fender well, in front of the wheel. This exposes the rear headlight assembly nut. Remove this nut with a ratchet and socket.

  • Pull the headlight assembly forward to remove it from the Ram 3500. Turn the headlight over and locate the headlight bulb, the light on the inner part of the headlight assembly.

  • Unplug the wiring harness plugging into the rear of the headlight assembly, by pressing the locking button and pulling it from the headlight.

  • Grab the rear of the headlight bulb and turn it counterclockwise to unlock it. Pull the headlight bulb from the headlight assembly.

  • Insert the new H13 bulb into the headlight assembly, lining up the tabs on the bulb with the notches on the assembly. Turn the bulb clockwise to lock it into place.

  • Plug the wiring harness into the rear of the headlight bulb and listen for it to click into place.

  • Reinstall the headlight assembly on the front of the Ram 3500, tighten the two front bolts and rear nut to 6 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket. Press the rubber plug back into place inside the front, inner wheel well.

  • Close the Ram's hood.
