How to Replace a 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue Head Gasket

The head gasket on an Oldsmobile 2000 Intrigue is located inside the engine on top of the valve platform. Sparks that ignite fuel in the cylinders create pressure inside the engine. The head gasket provides a seal to keep that pressure contained within cylinders and prevents engine water and oil from leaking or mixing. If you notice frequent coolant leaks, it could be the result of a gasket that needs to be replaced. Visit your Oldsmobile dealer or auto parts store to buy a replacement head gasket specific to the 2000 Intrigue model.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement head gasket
  • Socket wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Coolant
  • Scraper
  • Funnel
  • Air filter
  • Motor oil
  • Remove the Oldsmobile negative battery cable to prevent accidental starting or short circuit. Use a socket wrench to unfasten the bolt attaching the cable to the battery.

  • Drain the cooling system: Set an empty pan underneath the radiator and remove the pressure cap. Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the radiator, and allow the coolant to drain into the tray. Replace the drain plug and pressure cap after the fluid drains out.

  • Disassemble the top portion of the engine. Remove the engine top cover using a socket wrench to detach its bolts. Set the cover and bolts aside. Locate the head gasket positioned on top of the valve platform and unfasten the small bolts securing it using an adjustable wrench. If the gasket is brittle and breaks, use a small scraper tool to peel the gasket chunks from inside of the valve grooves.

  • Align the new gasket on top of the valve platform so that the gasket fits inside the valve platform grooves. Oldsmobile requires that you refasten the head gasket back onto the platform with its head bolts. Consult with an Oldsmobile 2000 repair manual to find the correct torque levels and specific sequence when tightening these bolts.

  • Install the valve cover on top of the gasket, refasten its bolts and reposition the engine cover back into place, securing all bolts tightly with the adjustable wrench.

  • Remove the radiator fill cap and position a funnel inside the radiator fill hole. Add coolant to the reservoir, as directed in the owner's manual. Replace the radiator fill cap and run the engine for 10 to 15 minutes.

  • Install a new air filter. Remove the oil cap and insert a funnel inside the filler hole. Add motor oil to the reservoir in the amount specified in the owner's manual. Replace the oil cap and check the dipstick oil level. Reinstall the negative battery cable.
