How to Change Ink in MX870s

The Canon PIXMA MX870 is an all-in-one ink jet printer that has several different features and capabilities. Like other ink jet printers, the Canon MX870 uses ink cartridges to provide the ink for printing. If the ink runs out on your MX870, you can easily remove a used cartridge and install a new one in a matter of seconds. The MX870 uses five cartridges, but they all have the same installation and removal process.

Things You'll Need

  • New PGI-220 BK CLI-221 cartridges
  • Open the lid of the printer to move the cartridge tray to the center.

  • Remove the empty ink cartridge by lifting up its tab, tilting it downwards and removing it from the printer.

  • Peel off the orange tape from the new cartridge and peel off the plastic protection film. Rotate the orange cap 90 degrees and pull it off.

  • Tilt the cartridge downwards and insert it into the cartridge tray in the printer, making sure the label on the cartridge matches the label on the tray. Press down on the "PUSH" part of the ink tank until the cartridge clicks.

  • Install any other cartridges that need replacing by repeating Steps 1 through 4 for the respective cartridges and then close the printer lid.
