Starting in 1983 and up to 1995, Toyota fitted some of its vehicle models with the 22R-E engine, including the Celica, Pickup and 4Runner. The 22R-E came equipped with a data link connector (DLC), or check connector, to retrieve trouble codes stored in the vehicle's computer, which Toyota refers to as the engine control module (ECM). Whenever the computer detects a sensor or circuit working outside of predetermined parameters, it stores a code in its memory. Finding the connector for code retrieval can save you time and money when servicing your Toyota vehicle.
Open the hood of your Toyota vehicle.
Locate the check connector to the right (passenger's side) and near the firewall of the engine compartment. Look for a small box, between 3 to 4 inches in length, 1 or 2 inches wide and 3 inches tall.
Flip the top lid of the check connector open. You will see three sets of electrical connectors under the lid.
Inspect the diagram under the check connector lid. It will tell you the alphanumeric code for each of the electrical connectors.
Consult the service manual for your particular vehicle model, if you want to retrieve the trouble codes stored in your Toyota computer memory. The manual will tell you which two electrical connectors you need to access for the codes.
