How to Replace a Volvo S70 Fuel Filter

The fuel filter in your S70 keeps dirt, sand, and other contaminants from your fuel supply. These contaminants could damage parts of your engine, including injectors and other components. The S70 fuel filter is in the same location and of the same type as a Volvo 850. Replacing the fuel filter is about a 20 minute job if you aren't familiar with the procedure. If you've done similar jobs before, it should only take 5 or 10 minutes once you've allowed the fuel pressure to release.

Things You'll Need

  • Car ramps or floor jack
  • New fuel filter
  • Pan
  • Wrench set
  • Flat blade screwdriver
  • Place your car on ramps or a very stable floor jack. Make sure your car is securely elevated to prevent it from falling and causing an injury.

  • Allow your car to sit for an hour or two to allow pressure in the fuel system to dissipate. This will minimize leakage when you replace the fuel filter.

  • Locate the fuel filter. The fuel filter is located on the bottom of your car's passenger side just in front of the rear axle.

  • Place a pan under the old fuel filter to catch any gas that leaks out. If you allowed your car to sit for an hour or two, this should be minimal.

  • Pop the return line out of its bracket and loosen the nut that tightens the band around the old fuel filter.

  • Slip the fuel filter out of the band once the band is loose enough.

  • Remove the plastic caps that come on the new filter and set them aside to put on the old filter to prevent gas leakage.

  • Push the connector rings on the old filter away from the housing with a flat blade screwdriver. Once the connector rings are loosened, the fuel lines should come off. They may stick a bit, wiggle them loose with a flat blade screwdriver.

  • Place the caps on either end of the old filter to prevent leakage.

  • Slip the fuel lines onto the new filter and slip the filter into the band. Tighten the band down with the wrench and clip the return fuel line in place.
