How to Change Glow Plugs on a Bobcat Skid Steer

The Bobcat Skid Steer is a compact loader that is versatile and utilizes various attachments to fulfill a number of roles. The Bobcat uses modern glow plug technology to ensure that the engine starts in any kind of weather. Unlike a spark plug, which uses a spark to start the engine, a glow plug is heated by an external electrical source. The glow plug heats the fuel, which causes a combustive reaction that starts your engine.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Ratchet (size 12)
  • Replace your glow plugs if your engine won't start, misfires when starting or your dashboard glow plug light begins to blink.

  • Locate the glow plugs, which will be below the metal fuel lines and fuel injectors. Remove the fuel lines using a wrench and move them out of the way. Do not bend the fuel lines.

  • Remove the electrical lines that are attached to the glow plugs with a bolt. Keep the bolts in a safe place.

  • Use the size 12 ratchet to remove the glow plug. You may have to use a wrench to reach the last glow plug due to space constraints.

  • Clean the electrical wires, glow plug hole and bolts. Screw in the new glow plugs until they are snug. Replace the electrical lines and bolts and screw them tightly in place.
