How to Check the Hydrostatic Fluid on an MTD

The hydrostatic fluid in your MTD tractor, also called hydraulic fluid, helps facilitate the movement of power in your tractor. Hydrostatic fluid should be checked periodically by measuring the amount in the corresponding reservoir. When checking the dipstick, your hydrostatic fluid should meet the "COLD FILL" line at the bottom of the stick. If it falls far beneath this line, it's important that you add more fluid so that your tractor can run efficiently.

Things You'll Need

  • Hydrostatic fluid
  • Funnel
  • Rag
  • Park the tractor on an even surface and in an area that is well lit and allows you to maneuver.

  • Pull the hood of the tractor open so that you can access the hydrostatic fluid reservoir.

  • Look behind the tractor's engine and find the hydrostatic fluid dipstick, labeled as such. Remove this dipstick and wipe away the fluid already attached. Replace the dipstick.

  • Pull the dipstick again and read the levels of your fluid.

  • Add more fluid if the dipstick calls for it. Place your funnel over the hole where the dipstick was removed. Pour about a quarter of the hydrostatic fluid through the funnel.

  • Place the dipstick back into the reservoir and measure your fluid levels once more. Keep measuring and adding fluid until you have the correct amount.
