How to Replace a 2003 Cummins Crankshaft Position Sensor

The crankshaft position sensor in your Dodge Ram Cummins records the rate of the spinning crankshaft. This speed is displayed on your dashboard by the RPM gauge. The information is sent to the engine's computer to deliver the fuel at the proper time and amount. A faulty unit may cause your truck to idle inconsistently or have poor acceleration. The sensor may be purchased at any auto parts store and installed yourself, using simple tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet
  • Socket set
  • Open the hood by pulling the release lever from inside the cab of your truck.

  • Remove the negative terminals from both batteries, using a ratchet and socket. The negative cable is black.

  • Locate the starter motor on the engine by crawling under the vehicle on the driver's side. There is a large red cable from the battery that connects to the starter motor. Remove the cables from the starter motor, using a ratchet and socket.

  • Remove the bolts that secure the starter motor in position. There are three 10mm bolts that must be removed with a 12-point socket. Lay the starter motor on the ground.

  • Locate the throttle position sensor on the engine where the starter motor was mounted. It is held on by a connecting bolt. It is mounted in line with the oil dipstick tube.

  • Remove the mounting bolt and wiring connection. Remove the crankshaft position sensor from the engine.

  • Install the new crankshaft position sensor into the engine by threading it in a clockwise direction. Place the bolt into the bracket and tighten it, using a ratchet and socket.

  • Replace the starter motor and tighten the bolts. Attach the wiring connections to the starter motor.

  • Reinstall the battery terminals onto the batteries and tighten the bolts, using a ratchet and socket.
