How to Troubleshoot the Front End on a Dodge Ram Truck

The front end of your Dodge RAM is where the steering system is located. When problems occur with the steering, the vehicle will not drive properly. This can lead to uneven tire wear, which can compound steering problems. Preventing a steering issue from occurring in the front end of your RAM is done by performing routine maintenance on the vehicle. You can then fix any outstanding issues that are found rather than take the vehicle to a repair shop for service.

Things You'll Need

  • Power steering fluid
  • Tire gauge
  • Open the hood of the vehicle to verify that the hoses and belts are secure and in good working order.

  • Remove the cover for the power steering fluid reservoir. Check the level of the power steering fluid in the reservoir. Fill the reservoir with power steering fluid if it is low.

  • Check the pressure of the tires with the tire gauge. Read the sticker on the right of the frame when the driver's side door is open. This sticker indicates the proper air pressure for the tires.

  • Examine the front tires and look for any signs of wear. Check the tire's tread level. Tires that are extremely worn or have a low tread level need to be replaced.

  • Drive the vehicle to see if it pulls to the left or drifts to the right. If the vehicle pulls in one direction or the other, it is an indication that the alignment is out.

  • Listen for any type or metallic sound when applying the brakes. Most brake systems have a probe that makes noise when the brake pads become too worn. Take the vehicle in to a dealer to check the brakes.
