VW Cabriolet Convertible Top Installation Instructions

Installing a new convertible top on to your Volkswagen Cabriolet is a challenging task which should only be attempted by an experienced mechanic. Installing a convertible top if a great way for you to enjoy a sunny day driving in your Cabriolet. You can purchase a convertible top installation kit from your local auto store. The job will take you a full afternoon to complete.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • Contact adhesive
  • Enter the inside of your Cabriolet. Locate the screws attached to the retaining strip in the interior of your Volkswagen. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws which hold the strip in place. Place your hands on the tension cables which connect the strip to the top bow. Turn the cables in a counterclockwise direction to loosen them from the bow. Pull the cables out of place.

  • Remove the screws which connect the weatherstripping to the top bow. Pull the stripping away from the bow. Remove the bow from the frame of your Cabriolet.

  • Grab the convertible top kit and lift the top onto the frame of your Volkswagen. Place contact adhesive to either side of the top bow. Leave the adhesive to set. This will secure the top bow on the convertible top to the frame of your vehicle.

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to reattach the weatherstripping and retaining strip back onto the convertible top.

  • Place a small amount of adhesive at the very back of the convertible top. This will help secure that portion of the top to the frame of the Cabriolet.

  • Place the tension cables from the retaining strip back into the top bow. Turn the cables in a clockwise direction to tighten them in place. Raise and lower your new top a few times to check that it is working correctly.
