Where Is the Cam Position Sensor on a 2000 Pontiac Montana?

The camshaft position (CMP) sensor tracks the speed and position of the camshaft. The information from the CMP is used to calculate ignition timing, firing order, fuel injector timing and diagnostics.

Operation

  • A reluctor attached to the camshaft, generates a digital signal as it passes the sensor's magnetic coil. The sensor uses the alternating lines of magnetic flux to create a digital pulse. The sensor then sends a signal to the power control module (PCM).

System

  • The cam position sensor is just one of many sensors sending information to the PCM. The PCM uses all of the sensors to monitor how the engine is running and determine if adjustments need to be made.

Location

  • The camshaft position sensor is in the front of the engine, in the well between the cylinder heads where the intake manifold sits, right behind the power steering pump.
