How to Remove the Lug Nuts on a Semi Truck

The lug nuts on a semi truck are just like the lug nuts on a car or standard-size pickup--only they're much larger. You'll need an impact wrench capable of removing these lug nuts. You also need a special high-capacity jack and 12-ton jack stands. The last two items are specialty tools that aren't sold in typical auto parts stores. But once you have them, the job should take no more than 10 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Lug nut puller
  • High-capacity jack
  • 12-ton jack stands
  • Tire wrench
  • Pull the lug nut covers off with a lug nut puller. A lug nut puller is a special tool for semis that removes the protective covering over the lug nuts.

  • Place the high-capacity jack under the semi's front cross member and lift up. Place the 12-ton jack stands underneath the frame of the truck, and lower the truck onto the stands.

  • Place the correct-size socket over your semi truck's lug nuts and turn the lugs counterclockwise with an impact wrench until they come loose. Then remove the nut.
