How to Install a Prius Grill

After an accident, daily wear and tear or climate concerns, it is sometimes necessary to replace the stock grill on your Toyota Prius. As you drive, this grill allows air to flow through to the engine compartment while it traps bugs and debris. However, the stock grill may not trap all of the bugs, which is especially true if you live in an area prevalent with insects, such as in warmer climates. You can replace the original finned grill with a new mesh grill, which will prevent smaller insects from getting into the AC condenser. A mesh grill is also easier to clean, because fewer objects can become trapped in it.

Things You'll Need

  • Clip remover
  • Screwdriver
  • Socket set
  • Mesh grill
  • Open the hood and disconnect the negative cable of your battery by removing the clamp that holds it on the negative terminal.

  • Use a clip remover to remove the clip under the front left-hand side fender liner. Partially pull out the fender liner so the area around the bumper cover is exposed.

  • Repeat the above procedure for the front right-hand side fender liner.

  • Look under the front part of the engine compartment and remove the five bolts and four screws that secure the engine under cover, and remove the cover.

  • Remove the seven screws that secure the front spoiler cover, which is located directly under the grill. Remove the front spoiler cover.

  • Locate the three clips and two radiator grill protectors that secure the front bumper cover to the front of the engine. These are on the front inside lining of the hood. Remove them using a clip remover and a screwdriver.

  • Locate the four screws on the underside of the front bumper cover and remove them. Pry the front bumper cover away from the rest of the body.

  • Use a screwdriver to detach the 12 claws that hold the radiator grill to the front bumper cover. There are six on the top and six on the bottom of the grill.

  • Snap the new grill onto the 12 claws of the front bumper cover. Reassemble the front bumper in the exact opposite order that you disassembled it. Reconnect the cable to the negative terminal of your battery.
