How to Replace an ABS Controller in a Honda CR-V

The anti-lock braking system (ABS) on the Honda CR-V prevents the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. The ABS controller does this by reducing the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. The ABS warning light may mean you need to replace the ABS controller. However, a non-functioning ABS does not necessarily mean your vehicle is unsafe to drive.

Things You'll Need

  • New ABS controller
  • Socket wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  • Determine which ABS controller your Honda CR-V will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of CR-V. ABS was first featured on the EX trim level of the 1997 model and was standard on all versions of the CR-V by 2005.

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Pull the lock on the 47P connector of the ABS controller to detach the connector from the ABS controller.

  • Remove the six brake lines with a socket wrench and plug the ends of the hoses to prevent the brake fluid from leaking. Remove the three 6mm bolts from the ABS controller bracket with a socket wrench and detach the ABS controller bracket from the body of your vehicle. Remove the three 6mm bolts from the ABS controller to separate it from its brackets.

  • Install the new ABS controller by reversing the removal procedure. Use a torque wrench to tighten all of the 6mm mounting bolts to 7.2 foot pounds. Reconnect the six brake lines and torque the nuts to 11 foot pounds.

  • Bleed the brake system on the front wheels followed by the back wheels. Start the engine and drive the vehicle to ensure the ABS and VSA indicators do not come on.
