How to Repair a Floor Pan

The floor pan of a car is the metal layer of the cab that supports the interior of the car. The carpet and seats are placed over the floor pan. If you have a damaged floor pan, the interior of the cab is no longer waterproof. Water and air can come inside the vehicle, and the floor pan can quickly rust. The best way to repair the floor pan is to eliminate any rust and patch any existing holes in the floor pan with fiberglass matting and resin. This will extend the life of your floor pan by many years.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench or ratchet set
  • Putty knife
  • Adhesive remover
  • Soft cloths or paper towels
  • Hand-held sanding disc
  • Sandpaper
  • Rust-inhibiting paint
  • Fiberglass mat
  • Thick work gloves
  • Scissors
  • Fiberglass resin
  • Paint brush
  • Remove the seats from the car. Use a wrench or appropriately sized ratchet set to remove the bolts holding the seats in place. Set aside the seats and bolts. Remove the carpet and any padding from the floor. Use a putty knife to pry up the carpet from the flooring if it is stuck.

  • Spray some adhesive remover over the floor pan to remove any remaining adhesive. Wipe away the residue with soft cloths or paper towels.

  • Sand the floor pan with the sanding disc to remove any traces of rust. Wipe the floor with a damp cloth to remove the rusted dust. Allow the floor to dry.

  • Paint over the entire floor with rust-inhibiting paint. Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours.

  • Cut some pieces of fiberglass matting so that each piece is one inch larger than any holes in the floor pan by one inch on each side. Wear leather gloves when touching the fiberglass to prevent the glass from hurting your hands.

  • Paint the areas around the holes with the fiberglass resin. Press the fiberglass sheets in place over the holes. Paint the top of the fiberglass sheets with another coating of resin. Allow the resin to dry for 24 hours.
