How to Remove the Overhead Console From a Jetta

Your Volkswagen Jetta has an overhead console that holds the center interior light. The light has a three-way switch mounted on the side of it that turns the light to the "Off" position, the "On" position or the "On Only When Car Door is Open" position. If you ever have to change the roof liner or make repairs to the light's overhead switch you will have to remove the overhead console. Removal time is about 20 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Screwdrivers
  • Open your Jetta's hood and disconnect the negative battery cable. Loosen the retaining bolt on the battery cable clamp with your socket set.

  • Pry the inside plastic cover free from the plastic trim frame of the console. Use your flat-head screwdriver to do this.

  • Insert your Phillips-head screwdriver into one of the two screws holding the switch and inner housing in place and turn it to the left until it comes out. Then remove the screw on the other side.

  • Pull the dome light lamp from your Jetta's socket, and then pull the entire assembly down.

  • Disconnect the wires from the three-way switch with your screwdriver, and then lower the overhead console completely from the Jetta's roof.
