How to Troubleshoot the Lights on GM Radios

The radio lights, also referred to as dash lights, on GM manufactured vehicles are prone to failing over time. The two most common problems with the radio lights are the bulbs themselves and the bulbs' fuse. If either component is faulty, replacement will remedy the issue. The bulb fuse is located in the passenger compartment fuse panel and the bulbs are contained on the radio itself.

Things You'll Need

  • Slotted screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 194-type bulb
  • Park the vehicle and open the driver's side door.

  • Remove the fuse panel cover, prying it with a slotted screwdriver. Locate the "Radio" fuse and pull it out. If the metal piece inside of the fuse is broken, you will need to replace it.

  • Install a 10A fuse in its place and reattach the cover. If the radio lights are still malfunctioning, the issue may be with the bulbs.

  • Remove the two screws securing the radio to the GM vehicle with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull out the radio and disconnect its wiring connector.

  • Remove the buttons from the front of the radio with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the bulbs from their sockets by pulling them straight out and replace them with new 194-type bulbs.

  • Reattach the buttons to the front of the radio and reconnect the wiring harness. Place the radio back into the vehicle and reinstall the two screws.
