Replacing the flasher switch, also known as a turn signal or combination switch, is an involved process that requires you to removal the steering wheel and dismantle the steering column. You can purchase replacement combination switches from your local automotive parts shop, and the replacement process will take approximately one hour. Be sure to disconnect the battery before beginning the procedure as this will disengage the airbag and prevent it from disengaging.
Turn off the vehicle's engine and raise the hood. Disconnect the battery with a socket wrench.
Remove the two screws at the back of the steering wheel with a Torx screwdriver. Remove the steering wheel cover from the steering wheel. If it is stuck, pry it out with a slotted screwdriver. Disconnect the electrical connection from the steering wheel cover and remove it from the vehicle.
Remove the horn pad from the steering wheel and disconnect its electrical connection.
Use a socket wrench to remove the bolt from the back of the steering wheel. Pull the steering wheel off of the steering column and remove it from the vehicle.
Remove the two screws from the underside of the dash trim panel above the instrument cluster. Pull the dash trim panel out of the vehicle.
Insert a slotted screwdriver in between the upper and lower shrouds of the steering wheel column and remove them both by prying them off. Use the lockplate removal tool to remove the lockplate. Use the shaft nut of the removal tool to force the lockplate off the steering column.
Remove the flasher switch lever screw with a Phillips screwdriver and pull the lever out of the steering column.
Press the hazard switch button inward to reveal its screw. Remove the screw with a Phillips screwdriver and remove the hazard switch button.
Remove the two flasher switch retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
Disconnect the electrical connection of the switch and pull the switch out of the steering column.
Place the replacement switch into the steering column. Install the switch mounting screws and connect the electrical connection to the switch.
Reconnect the hazard switch button and its screw. Reattach the flasher switch lever and its screw.
Reattach the lockplate and place the dash trim panel back onto the vehicle, above the instrument cluster. Snap the steering column shrouds back onto the steering column.
Place the steering wheel back onto the steering column and reinstall the steering wheel bolt.
Place the horn pad back into the steering wheel and reconnect its connection. Place the steering wheel cover back onto the steering wheel, reconnect its electrical connection, and secure it with the two steering wheel cover retaining screws.
Reconnect the battery and close the Chevy vehicle's hood.
