How to Repair the Wiper Motor on a '99 Dodge Ram

The wiper motor on the 1999 Dodge Ram has many moving parts that can wear out after many years of use. The bushing usually wear out first, so be sure to check the bushings before replacing the entire motor. It's good to know that wiper motors found in the auto parts stores are typically remanufactured, but they will work fine. The motor magnets are 100 percent recharged, and the motor has lubricant in it to ensure quiet operation and a longer life.

Things You'll Need

  • Set of wrenches
  • Screwdriver
  • Set of sockets
  • Torque wrench (inch-pounds)
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable, using the appropriate wrench, and set it aside, ensuring that it does not touch metal. Remove the wiper arms, using the screwdriver. Peel the weather stripping off the front of the grille. Remove the four screws that hold the grill on, using the appropriate socket.

  • Raise the grille enough to gain access to the washer hoses. Loosen the clamps on the hoses on the right side of the grille, using a screwdriver. Pull the hoses off at the connector. Remove the grille.

  • Remove the four screws that hold the motor assembly, using the appropriate socket. Two screws are near the motor and there is one screw on each end. Turn the assembly over and unplug the wiring harness connector.

  • Install the wiper motor and tighten the screws to 72 inch-pounds of torque. Set the grille into place and reconnect the hoses. Screw the grille back into place, then stick the weather stripping onto the grille. Reinstall the wiper arms. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
