How to Replace the ABS in a 2001 VW Jetta

Your 2001 Volkswagen Jetta comes with an anti-lock braking system. Anti-lock braking systems are a safety feature that measures wheel speed and prevents your brakes from locking up under poor driving conditions. There is a sensor located on each wheel. These sensors report wheel speeds back to your Jetta's computer. If one of your sensors goes out, you will receive a check engine light. You can bring your Jetta to an auto parts store and they can run a free diagnostic test for you that will tell you which wheel sensor you need to replace.

Things You'll Need

  • Lug wrench
  • Jack
  • Jack stand
  • Wrench
  • Replacement ABS sensor
  • Park your Jetta on a flat surface and place emergency brake on.

  • Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel where you will be changing the ABS sensor.

  • Jack up that wheel and place the jack stand under your frame. Set your Jetta down on the jack stand.

  • Remove the lug nuts and the wheel.

  • Find your ABS sensor and unplug the plastic wiring harness from the back of it. On your Jetta, the ABS sensor is mounted to the inside of the brake caliper. Next, remove the retaining bolt that holds your sensor in place and remove the old sensor.

  • Hold the new sensor in place and mount it with the retaining bolt. Tighten the bolt with your socket set. Plug the plastic wiring harness back in. Lower your Jetta down from jack and jack stands.
