How to Remove the Fuel Pump Cut Off Relay in a Honda

The Honda fuel cut off relay is a safety feature. Through the relay the fuel pump only runs when the engine is turned on. When the engine is off, so is the fuel pump. In case of an accident in which the fuel lines rupture, no fuel is being pumped through them so long as the engine is off. The cut off relay has four wires: a ground, a wire from the ignition control module, a wire from the battery and a wire from the pump. Removing this little device should take you no more than five minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Open the hood. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.

  • Loosen and remove the screws securing the lower dashboard beneath the steering wheel of your Honda. Pull off the lower dashboard.

  • Locate the small, brown box attached to a circuit panel by two mounting screws. This is the fuel cut off relay.

  • Pull off the relay from the four wires it is attached to.
