How to Remove Broken Starter Bolts

If your engine isn't starting when you turn the key, replacing the starter could be one of the repair options. Several bolts hold the starter in place, and if the car is old, one or more of these bolts could be broken. If that's the case, the removal process of these bolts will be altered slightly.

Things You'll Need

  • Penetrating oil
  • Hammer
  • Center punch
  • Electric drill
  • Bolt extractor
  • Pour a penetrating oil onto and around the bolt.

  • Wait approximately a half-hour for the penetrating oil to soak into the threading of the bolt. The oil needs time to drain past the surface and onto the bolt's threads.

  • Create an indent in the center of the bolt head with a center punch. This will provide a place for a drill bit to rest and prevent it from sliding around the head of the bolt.

  • Use a power drill to create a hole in the center of bolt's head. It should be deep enough to accept the bolt extractor you will be using.

  • Insert the bolt extractor into the drilled hole. Turn the bolt extractor counterclockwise to remove the broken bolt from the starter. If you are still struggling with the removal, add more oil and allow it to soak into the bolt for at least a half-hour.
