How to Bleed a Clutch Slave Cylinder on a 1993 Ford Ranger

Bleeding the clutch slave cylinder on a 1993 Ford Ranger requires an assistant to operate the clutch pedal. The slave cylinder receives its pressure from a master cylinder operated by the clutch pedal. This system is a gravity-fed system. However, air can become trapped at any point in the line, which limits the travel of the slave cylinder.

Things You'll Need

  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Set of wrenches
  • Brake fluid
  • Raise the truck with the floor jack and place jack stands under the frame. Lower the truck onto the jack stands. Open the hood and remove the cap on the clutch master cylinder reservoir, making sure it is full of brake fluid.

  • Position yourself under the truck, and open the slave cylinder bleeder valve with a wrench. It is located next to the inlet line. Allow the fluid to drain. Being gravity fed, if there is air in the line, brake fluid will just drip out of the bleeder screw until the air is evacuated. Allow it to drain until a steady stream of fluid is seen at the bleeder. At this point tighten the bleeder screw. Always make sure the clutch reservoir doesn't run out of fluid or air will become trapped in the system.

  • Depress the clutch pedal and hold it to the floor for three seconds -- have an assistant do this. Release it abruptly. Do this four to five times. Tell the assistant not to let the pedal up until he or she is told to do so. When bleeding the system, the bleeder must be opened with the pedal down, which creates pressure in the system. If the pedal is let up with the bleeder ope,n it will create a vacuum and suck air into the slave cylinder. The bleeder must be closed when the pedal is lifted.

  • Open the slave cylinder bleeder screw with the clutch pedal down. The fluid will come out with a small amount of force. After the fluid comes out, close the bleeder. Tell the assistant to pump the clutch pedal three times and then hold the pedal down on the floor until told to do otherwise. Open the bleeder again and allow the fluid to flow followed by closing the bleeder. The clutch can be lifted at this point.

  • Check and fill the clutch master cylinder reservoir. Lower the truck.
