How to Replace an Airbag in a Tundra

Your Toyota Tundra truck is equipped with airbags to provide cushion during a collision, designed to prevent serious injuries and even death. Once the airbag has deployed, you need to replace it for safety. Although a professional should handle this, you can safely do it yourself with basic mechanics knowledge and a couple of tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • New replacement airbag
  • Open your driver's side door and pull the hood latch located near the floor under the dash to pop your hood. Lift the hood and locate your battery at the front of your vehicle. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. This will prevent the new airbag from deploying at the incorrect time during installation and possibly causing an injury.

  • Open your fuse panel located on the lower part of the dash inside your truck. Look at the diagram to find the airbag fuse. Pull the fuse out of its slot to fully deactivate the airbag system.

  • Unscrew the screws from your steering column with a screwdriver and remove the panels. This will give you access to the old airbag. Unscrew the airbag from behind the steering wheel. Pull out the airbag until you see the wiring harness. Unplug it from the harness and discard the old airbag.

  • Plug the wires of the new replacement airbag into the wiring harness in the column. Gently push the airbag into the column. Screw it in place behind the steering wheel with a screwdriver.

  • Place the steering column panels back in place and screw them in snugly. Replace the airbag fuse in the fuse panel and close it. Reconnect the negative battery cable back to its post and close the hood.
