How to Install a Carter Fuel Pump on a 2002 Nissan Frontier

Nissan began production of the Frontier in 1998, and the 2002 model is part of that first generation. It was offered with either a 2.4-liter or a 3.3-liter engine. A Carter fuel pump is an aftermarket replacement for the factory fuel pump on your Nissan Frontier. The Carter fuel pump comes with a fuel strainer, and it fits directly into the gas tank without the need for any adapters.

Things You'll Need

  • Siphon pump kit
  • Gas cans
  • Truck jack
  • 2 jack stands
  • Socket wrench set
  • Latex gloves
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Strap
  • Rag
  • Hammer
  • Motor oil
  • Carter fuel pump #P76039
  • Open the gas cap on the passenger's side. Slide the siphon into the gas filler pipe. Siphon out the gas from the tank into spare gas cans.

  • Open the hood. Loosen the negative battery terminal nut. Remove the negative battery cable and set it aside.

  • Set the emergency brake. Raise the rear of the Frontier with the jack. Lower the truck onto two jack stands.

  • Put on your latex gloves. Loosen the screw on the collar of the filler hose securing the hose to the fitting on the gas tank, using your screwdriver. Pull off the hose. Clean up any gas that leaks out with your rag. Repeat this process for the vent hose on the side of the gas tank.

  • Remove the four 12 mm bolts securing the drive shaft to the rear axle, using your socket wrench set. Swing the drive shaft away from the gas tank and secure it to the frame rail with a strap.

  • Position the floor jack below the gas tank. Remove one of the straps that holds the gas tank in place. Rest the tank on the jack.

  • Unplug the wiring connector on the fuel pump. Pull off the fuel return line and the EVAP hose from the fuel pump.

  • Remove the second gas tank strap and rest the tank fully on the floor jack.

  • Clean the top of the fuel tank with a shop rag. Remove the locking ring around the fuel pump by hitting it in a counterclockwise direction with your hammer. Pull out the fuel pump and gasket.

  • Grease the Carter fuel pump gasket. Lay the gasket on the opening in the gas tank. Insert the Carter fuel pump through the opening. Orient the stems of the fuel pump so that they are within the guiding grooves on the fuel tank. Secure it in place with the locking ring.

  • Reinstall the fuel tank. Reattach the fuel return line, the electrical connector and the EVAP hose to the fuel pump. Connect the vent hose and the gas filler hose to the fuel tank.

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn on the ignition several times. Check under the Frontier for gas leaks. Refit any joints that are leaking. Remove the two jack stands and lower the truck to the ground.
