How to Troubleshoot Jeep Interior Lights

Like many modern automobiles, Jeep vehicles have interior lights, often called map lights or dome lights, that you can activate at night for interior visibility purposes or that activate automatically when you open the door to help you see how to enter or exit the vehicle. If your interior lights stop functioning you can troubleshoot the chief causes of the problem yourself -- blown fuses, blown bulbs or inaccurate switch setting. Fixing the problem is relatively simple and inexpensive.

Things You'll Need

  • 15-amp blue fuse
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • PLW214--2A bulb

Replace Fuse

  • Park the Jeep and shut off the engine. Open the hood to access the engine compartment.

  • Locate the totally integrated power module fuse box on the right side of the engine directly behind the battery.

  • Lift the tab on the front of the TIPM and open the cover.

  • Locate the fuse corresponding to the interior lights that no longer work, usually labeled M20. Grasp the edges of the fuse with your hand and pull directly out of the TIPM. If you have trouble grasping the fuse with your hand, use a pair of needle-nosed pliers.

  • Inspect the fuse to see if the metal link inside the fuse is solid or separated. If separated, replace the fuse with a 15 amp blue fuse. If solid, insert the fuse back into the TIPM.

Replace Bulb

  • Insert a thin flathead screwdriver between the overhead dome light cover and fixture and pry the cover off.

  • Remove the old dome light bulb by pulling it directly out of the socket. Discard the bulb.

  • Insert a new PLW214--2A bulb into the socket and press until the light bulb is secure.

  • Line up the tabs on the overhead dome light cover with the notches in the light fixture and press until the cover audibly snaps into place.

Switch Setting

  • Locate the dimmer control switch. This unit is a wheel located next to the headlight switch on some models and is on the dimmer control stalk on other models.

  • Turn the dimmer control switch upward fully to the brightest setting.

  • Activate the interior lights to see if they work properly.
