Most modern Ford vehicles are equipped with both driver and passenger air bag modules. You will need to remove a module if an air bag accidentally deploys. You may also need to remove one of the modules to access and work on other components within the dash. The modules are under tremendous pressure and need to be handled carefully at all times. This exact method can vary depending on the year and model of your Ford vehicle.
Disconnect the negative battery cable using a wrench on its cable clamp nut; the black cable is the negative one. Wait up to three minutes to deplete the air bag's reserve power.
Open the fuse box and disconnect the fuse for the air bags; on some models, disconnect the fuse for the Powertrain Control Module. Check the diagram on the fuse box to find the correct fuse.
Remove the bolts for the driver's air bag module with a wrench; they are on opposite sides of the wheel. Put the truck in neutral and turn the wheel to access each bolt if needed.
Slide the module carefully off the steering wheel to release the clips and disconnect its multi-plugs to remove the driver's air bag.
Remove the glove box to access the mounting bolts and wiring for the passenger air bag -- this generally involves opening the box, pushing it on its side to clear the stops and removing its screws.
Release the clips on the passenger module's upper cover with a flat-bladed tool and lift the cover up like a lid.
Unscrew and remove the module's screws with a screwdriver, lift it out of the dash and disconnect the wiring connector once it is accessible. You may need long-nosed pliers to disconnect the connector.
