How to Locate the Crankshaft Sensor on a '96 Chevy 2.2 Engine

The crankshaft sensor, officially called the crankshaft position sensor, is a vital part of your car's engine management system. The 1996 Chevrolet 2.2-L four-cylinder engine, like all modern vehicles, includes a crankshaft position sensor. Replacing the crankshaft position sensor is relatively easy once you locate it under the hood. One side is attached by bolts, and the other side simply plugs into a harness. The 2.2-L four-cylinder engine came in two 1996 Chevy vehicles: the Cavalier and the Corsica.

  • Turn the Chevy's engine off, and let it cool down for about 15 minutes. Open the hood.

  • Step to the passenger side of the engine compartment. Look between the valve cover -- the part of the engine with the spark plugs -- and the windshield. The large part here is the intake manifold.

  • Look beneath the intake manifold. Look for a wiring component bolted to the engine on one side, and plugged into a harness on the other. This is the crankshaft position sensor.
