How to Install a New Headlight Bulb in a 2004 RAV 4

Whether for stock replacement or to install an aftermarket bulb, chances are you will have to get into your RAV 4's headlight assembly during your ownership of the vehicle. Luckily, the RAV 4 has an easy-to-access headlight assembly that makes light bulb replacement a quick process.

Things You'll Need

  • Crescent wrench
  • 12mm socket wrench
  • Replacement bulb (see owner's manual)
  • Park your RAV 4 on a flat, open surface where the front of the vehicle is fully accessible.

  • Pop the hood and remove the negative (black) terminal from the battery using a crescent wrench. This will shut off the flow of power throughout the vehicle and prevent the possibility of shock.

  • Locate the headlight assembly on top of the radiator carriage. Remove the two round plastic caps covering the mounting bolts by pulling them off.

  • Remove the two mounting bolts using a 12mm socket wrench. Pull the back of the headlight assembly apart.

  • Remove the old bulb by pinching the plastic clamps on both sides of the housing and pulling the bulb out. Slide the new bulb into place. It should click in easily.

  • Slide the headlight assembly back together and replace the two mounting bolts and caps you removed.

  • Replace the negative terminal on the vehicle's battery, once again using a crescent wrench.
