How to Adjust a Front Bumper

The front bumper on your vehicle may need to be replaced or taken off for a number of reasons, including to be repaired, repainted or replaced with a new one. After installing the front bumper, you may notice that the spacing between the bumper and fenders or headlights is different than normal, or may not match the other side. The bumper can be adjusted so that all gaps and spaces are even. Adjusting the bumper should take less than 30 minutes can can be done fairly easily.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet
  • Socket set
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Remove the Phillips screws along the edges of the bumper located directly in front of the front tires. These screws hold the splash guard to the bumper and need to be completely removed so you can reach behind the bumper.

  • Open the hood and use a ratchet and socket to loosen the row of bolts holding the bumper in place. Don't remove them, just loosen them enough so that the bumper can be moved slightly.

  • Locate and loosen any other bolts behind the front bumper. Do not remove any bolts, only loosen them enough so that the bumper can be moved.

  • Step back and look at the bumper, comparing both the left and right sides. Push and pull on the bumper until it looks straight and all spaces and gaps are even.

  • Tighten all of the loose bolts, being careful to keep the bumper in place. Replace and tighten the Phillips screws along the edge of the bumper.
