How to Replace a GMC Power Steering Pump Pulley

Modern vehicles use a power steering system, which uses a hydraulic system to run fluid into the steering column, making it possible to steer the vehicle with less force. The system is run with the fluid moving from a reservoir into the power steering pump, which then moves the fluid into the column. The pump is powered from the vehicle's belt system, which turns a pulley mounted on the front of the pump. If the pulley becomes damaged or worn, it must be replaced for the pump to function properly.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket and ratchet set
  • Combination wrench set
  • Pliers or vice grips
  • Power steering pulley puller
  • Locate the sepentine belt tensioner pulley. Determine the socket size that is needed to fit on the nut on the front of the pulley; attach the socket to the ratchet, slip it onto the nut, and apply pressure in a counterclockwise direction to release the pressure from the serpentine belt.

  • Locate the power steering pulley and remove the serpentine belt from its routing around the pulley.

  • Place the small diameter threaded end of the power steering pulley remover into the hole on the front of the power steering pulley. Turn the cup-shaped piece of the remover by hand until it is firmly against the front of the pulley. Place the split piece of the remover on the sides of the power steering pump to either side of the entrance hole for the pulley shaft and over the flange on the cup-shaped piece. This secures the puller in place.

  • Place the socket that fits the bolt head of the puller onto a ratchet and place it on the bolt. Hold the ratchet in place and turn to loosen the nut on the shaft of the bolt by hand until it is snug against the cup-shaped piece.

  • Place an open-ended wrench on the nut you tightened by hand. Hold this nut stationary while turning the ratchet counterclockwise to loosen the collar of of the pulley. When the pulley comes loose, you are done with the removal.

  • Loosen the remover from the old pulley. Follow the same process as in step three, four and five to place the new pulley on the pump.

  • Loosen the pulley remover and remove from the new pulley.

  • Replace the serpentine belt around the power steering pulley. Ensure that the belt is properly threaded around the other pulleys and apply pressure with the ratchet on the belt tensioner in a clockwise direction until the belt is at proper tightness, which is usually with about 1/4 inch of give.
