Honda Passport Belt Installation

The front engine accessories on the Honda Passport model vehicles are controlled by a single multi-ribbed belt. The belt is designed to fit around each of the engine accessories at the same time. The single belt makes it possible to use just one belt instead of multiple belts to control the accessories. These accessories include the alternator, power steering pump, air-conditioner compressor and the water pump. If the belt starts to fray in any way, replace it as soon as possible before it breaks.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2-inch drive breaker bar
  • Metric socket set
  • Open the hood, and inspect the left hand side of the radiator shroud for the accessory belt diagram. The diagram should be stamped to the top flat surface of the radiator shroud. Use the routing instructions from this diagram to route the new belt.

  • Locate the accessory belt tensioner on the front of the engine, underneath the alternator. Use the pulley that is connected to the bottom of the tensioner arm to relieve the tension from the belt.

  • Position a breaker bar and a socket onto the bolt head in the middle of the tensioner pulley. Turn the breaker bar in a counter-clockwise direction to loosen the tension from the belt. Pull the belt off of the tensioner pulley. Allow the tensioner to retract until it stops.

  • Remove the belt from around all of the accessory pulleys, and out of the engine well.

  • Route the new belt around each accessory pulley, exactly as instructed by the accessory belt routing diagram.

  • Turn the tensioner counter-clockwise with the breaker bar and socket again. Slide the new belt onto the tensioner pulley and slowly let the tensioner retract. As it is retracting, the tensioner pulley will tighten the belt. Remove the breaker bar and socket from the tensioner.

  • Start the engine, and let it run for about ten seconds to completely seat the new belt to the inside grooves of each pulley. Turn the engine off.
