How to Replace Headlight Adjusting Screws

The headlight adjusting screws on your headlight assemblies allow you to change the horizontal and vertical aim of the headlight beams. Although the exact location of adjusting screws varies by the make and model of the vehicle, most screws are directly visible on top of the headlight assembly. This access makes it simple to replace them if they are getting worn. Expect the replacement procedure to take about 30 minutes because you should re-aim your headlights after replacing the adjustment screws.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Replacement screws
  • Tape
  • Tape measure
  • Turn off your vehicle. Prop open the hood with the hood support rod.

  • Locate the adjustment screws on your headlight assemblies. One is usually located on the fender side of the assembly and the other on the grille side of the assembly.

  • Turn each adjustment screw counterclockwise with your screwdriver to remove them. This action also changes the aim of the headlights.

  • Screw in the replacement adjustment screws. Do this for both headlight assemblies.

  • Park your vehicle directly in front of a wall or closed garage door.

  • Measure the height from the ground to the horizontal center of the headlights. Place a horizontal strip of tape on the wall in front of each headlight at this same height.

  • Place a vertical strip of tape on the wall in front of the vertical center of the headlight assemblies. This action creates two tape targets to use to re-aim your headlights.

  • Measure 25 feet away from the wall. Place tape on the ground to mark the spot. Reverse your vehicle until the headlights line up with the tape on the ground. Turn on your headlights.

  • Turn the adjustment screws to change the horizontal and vertical aim of the headlight beams. Aim the beams so that the high intensity portion hits the wall 2 inches below and to the right of the center of the corresponding tape target. This aim ensures that the beams illuminate the road and street signs.
