How Do I Change Out My Car Horn in a 2000 Cavalier?

A damaged car horn can be a potential safety hazard and, in some states, can cause a vehicle to fail a mandatory inspection. Replacing the horn in a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier is a relatively simple task that can be completed by most shade tree mechanics in an hour or so with a few simple tools. Changing the horn will ensure that you can safely alert other drivers of your presence on the road.

Things You'll Need

  • Automotive jack
  • Jack stands
  • Socket set
  • Screwdriver
  • Raise the front of the vehicle with an automotive jack and support it on jack stands.

  • Remove the fasteners holding the splash shield to the bumper fascia on both sides of the vehicle with a ratchet wrench. Unscrew the two bolts holding the bumper fascia to the front fender on both sides of the vehicle with the ratchet wrench.

  • Detach the push-in retainers holding the top of the bumper fascia to the radiator support by prying them up with a screwdriver. Unplug the electrical connectors for the parking lights and turn signals.

  • Remove the front bumper fascia. Disconnect the electrical connector to the horn.

  • Unscrew the bolt on the back of the horn bracket with the ratchet wrench then remove the horn.

  • Position the new horn onto the bracket and attach the bolt onto the back of the horn bracket with the ratchet wrench. Attach the electrical connector to the new horn.

  • Place the bumper fascia back onto the vehicle and push down the push-in retainers at the top of the fascia. Attach the electrical connectors for the parking lights and turn signals.

  • Reinstall the two bolts holding the bumper fascia to the front fender on both sides of the vehicle with the ratchet wrench. Replace the fasteners holding the splash shield to the bumper fascia on both sides of the vehicle with the ratchet wrench.

  • Lift the vehicle with the automotive jack, remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle.
