If the brake lights on your Lincoln Town Car are malfunctioning, they should be fixed immediately, as the brake lights make an essential contribution to the well-being of your vehicle. Troubleshooting a brake light is a simple process, as there are three main causes of brake lights malfunctioning: loose wires, old bulbs and broken fuses. All three issues have simple solutions that only require replacement parts and a wrench.
Turn off the Town Car's engine. Make sure the headlamp is in the Off position and open the trunk.
Pull the carpet out of the trunk to expose the lamp assembly hardware. Remove the three nut/washer assemblies and pull the lamp assembly out of the vehicle. Tug on the electrical connection. If it comes loose, securely plug it into the rear of the assembly. If your brake lights are still not working, the bulb may need to be changed.
Remove the top bulb socket from the assembly by rotating it counterclockwise. Pull the old bulb out and replace it with a 3157 K type bulb. Rotate the socket clockwise to secure it to the assembly. Place the assembly back into the vehicle and reattach the three nut/washer assemblies. Place the carpet back into the trunk and close the lid. If the lights still aren't working, there may be a fuse problem.
Open the hood and locate the fuse block on the driver's side of the vehicle. Remove the cover. Underneath the cover, you will find a fuse extractor tool and several spare fuses. Locate the fuse numbered 4. If the metal piece inside the fuse is broken, the fuse will need to be replaced.
Use the fuse extractor tool to remove the fuse and replace it with an identical spare fuse. Make sure you use only a 10A fuse. Place the cover back onto the vehicle. Close the hood.
