How to Retrieve Chrysler Fault Codes

Chrysler vehicles contain an onboard diagnostics system that constantly monitors many of the main operating components of the vehicle. When a problem is detected, the malfunction indicator light lights up and stays lit until the fault code of the problem is retrieved and the onboard diagnostic system is reset. If the problem continues, the light will keep lighting up. This code can be retrieved through an OBD reader that hooks up to a special plug in the Chrysler called a data link connector, or DLC.

Things You'll Need

  • OBD II Reader
  • Locate the data link connector in your Chrysler. The DLCs are usually located below the steering column. You can find the exact location, usually with a picture of the location, on the DLC locator site listed in the Resources section.

  • Plug the OBD reader into the data link connector and initiate the device.

  • Follow the reader's instructions for retrieving the fault codes from the onboard diagnostics system.

  • Read and record the fault code(s) provided by the OBD reader.

  • Compare the code(s) to the ones listed on the Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep/Plymouth OBD-II Trouble Codes page listed in the Resources section to determine the problem with the Chrysler.
