How to Remove an Odometer Cluster on a 2002 Buick

In 2002, Buick had five vehicles in their lineup: the Century, Regal, Park Avenue, LeSabre and Rendezvous. The odometer cluster, or instrument cluster as it is formally called, is mounted in the same way regardless of your 2002 Buick model. The instrument cluster gives a multitude of information about a vehicle, monitoring the speed, rpm, fuel level, odometer, trip odometer, turn signal indicators, and many warning lights.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/4-inch-drive ratchet and socket set
  • 1/4-inch-drive 3-inch extension
  • 1/4-inch-drive 6-inch extension
  • Remove the instrument cluster face panel, using a 1/4-inch ratchet, socket and 3-inch extension. The screws are mounted upward, so they are in the top of the face panel. Turn the screws counterclockwise to remove them, and use a 3-inch extension for better control on the head of the ratchet.

  • Remove the instrument cluster mounting bolts. There are four mounting bolts that hold the cluster in place, and they are located on the front of the instrument cluster. Use a 1/4-inch ratchet, socket and 6-inch extension for this step. Turn the bolts counterclockwise to remove them. The 6-inch extension will allow you to get deep enough in the dash to reach the bolts, while still leaving you room to turn the ratchet.

  • Lower the steering wheel as far down as it will go, using the steering wheel control lever on the left side of the steering column.

  • Slide the instrument cluster about halfway out of the dashboard, until you can reach the back of the cluster. Remove the electronic connectors by hand. Squeeze the connectors and pull them from the rear of the instrument cluster.

  • Remove the instrument cluster completely from the dashboard.
