The Fog Lights Won't Turn on in a Chevy Silverado

If you plan to drive your Chevrolet Silverado in murky or foggy conditions, it is important to have functional fog lights. Although not all models of the Chevy Silverado have fog lights installed, they are essential for your safety. The Silverado's fog lights are located below the headlights, and have a handful of common problems that can be remedied fairly quickly.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean towel
  • Replacement fog light bulb
  • Socket wrench
  • Replacement fuse

Checking the Wiring

  • Park the Silverado on a level surface. Turn off the Silverado's engine.

  • Crawl under the front of the vehicle and locate the fog lamp assemblies directly below the headlight assemblies. Click the release tab on the fog lamp assembly to allow access to the bulb.

  • Secure the electrical connector. Make sure it is snugly connected to the fog lamp assembly. Use a clean towel to push the bulb firmly to ensure it is secured as well.

Replacing the Bulb

  • Crawl under the front of the vehicle and click the release tab on the fog lamp assemblies.

  • Rotate the bulb socket counterclockwise to remove it from the Silverado. Pull the bulb straight out and dispose of it.

  • Place a new bulb into the socket. Do not touch the bulb directly. Use a clean towel to wipe off the new bulb and then to place it into the socket.

  • Place the socket back into the fog lamp assembly and rotate it clockwise to lock it.

  • Click the fog lamp assembly back into place.

Replacing the Fuse

  • Open the Silverado's hood. Use the socket wrench to disconnect the battery. Remove the negative terminal first. Then remove the positive terminal.

  • Remove the fuse box cover from the fuse box on the driver's side of the vehicle. Underneath the fuse box cover is a fuse puller and several replacement fuses.

  • Locate the fuse marked "28." This is the fog lamp fuse. Check to see if the fuse has popped or broken. If it has, use the accompanying fuse puller to pull it out of the fuse box and dispose of it. Replace it with one of the replacement fuses. Make sure the replacement fuse is the same as the original fuse.

  • Place the cover back onto the fuse box. Reconnect the terminals to the battery, starting with the negative terminal. Close the hood.
