How to Change Indicator Lights

Indicator lights, also known as turn signals, are usually orange lights that flash when switched on. They are used to show road users which direction you plan to maneuver. For your vehicle to be road worthy, most states in the U.S require that these are in working order. However, light bulbs can become worn out or blow, just like an interior house light. It is an easy problem to spot because the lights no longer flash when switched on or are no longer very bright. In a few simple steps you can avoid a trip to a mechanic by replacing the bulbs yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Indicator bulbs
  • Locate the indicator light that is broken. Turn the lights on and off when the vehicle is parked. Ask a friend to look at the front and rear indicator lights on both sides of the vehicle to tell you which ones are broken or dull.

  • Switch the car off and disconnect the battery for safety. Lift up the hood, find the battery and unscrew one cable that is attached to it. Your vehicle manual will be able to direct you to the location of the battery if you are unsure where it is.

  • Remove the plastic covering on the outside of the relevant indicator light. This tends to be the trickiest part of the job. Use a screwdriver to do this or pry it off using a socket and ratchet. Be firm but be careful otherwise you may crack the plastic. If you are having difficulty seek advice from a friend or refer to your car manual.

  • Unscrew and remove the damaged indicator light.

  • Look at the connection to make sure it is not loose. Debris, such as a build up of mud or dust, might be interfering with the electricity supply. Clean the area with a dry cloth, but unless you are qualified, do not attempt to repair any damage. Instead refer to a mechanic.

  • Take the bulb to an automotive parts supplier or your mechanic to obtain the correct indicator light for installation. Light bulbs vary depending on the age, model and design of the vehicle so taking the old bulb to a store will ensure you buy the correct one.

  • Screw the new bulb into place and reattach the car battery.

  • Switch the car on and test the indicator to ensure it is working properly. Make sure its brightness is restored and it flashes.

  • Replace the plastic covering that you removed to access the bulb. Make sure you tighten the screws securely so that the cover does not fall off while driving.
